Sgt Mills loves his community

Sergeant Jacob Mills has worked for the Harrison Police Department for 14 years. He has 12 years of experience in the SRO Division.

“My favorite part of this job is the relationships you build and the positive impact you have on those smiling faces who need guidance in this world. This job is 100% what you make of it. So dig in and positively invest in your community,” he said.

Sgt. Mills' first thought of working with junior high students was questionable. “It was bizarre to me – a style of policing I had never experienced. Looking back now, I’m glad my department gave me the opportunity. It’s opened doors and allowed me to participate in many beautiful youth-related things.”

“My advice for parents is to protect your kids on the front end. We all love our kids; sometimes, we must protect them from themselves. Peer pressure and temptation are real. Knowing who your kids are hanging around with and discussing unhealthy habits with internet devices is a must. It can be hard to see the problems from inside the screen. Don’t be so busy you wait to have those important parent talks with your kids. Be their parent, not their best friend. Their mental health depends on it.”

For fun, Sgt. Mills likes to go saltwater fishing with his family. He also enjoys kayaking, driving his Camaro, and getting to the shooting range when possible. “My youngest sons like it when I play Fortnite with them. I’ve built a wall or two.”

Harrison Middle School Principal Fred Wilson said,  “Officer Mills helps keep our school safe in many ways, such as before and after school traffic management, in the halls when students are switching classes, at lunch to keep all students safe, and a presence at the school to deter anyone from trying to harm.  Officer Mills makes students and staff feel safer when they come to school, allowing them to enjoy school and not worry about potential threats.  Officer Mills is a great role model and protector of all students and staff in the school and at school events.  Officer Mills forms relationships with students and provides lessons on various topics to keep them safe on the road or the internet.  We love Officer Mills and are fortunate to have him at Harrison Middle School!”
