The City Council met for the regular monthly meeting on Thursday, Aug. 22.
City Engineer Wade Phillips updated the Council on the downtown beautification project. He said new light poles should be installed in about two weeks, and the new trees and planters will probably be in late September or October.
Phillips said two Water/Sewer Department individuals, Hunter Sanders and Harley Sisco, have obtained their Class IV Water Operators Licenses. “It’s great when our people continue training and upgrading their licenses. That makes our department even stronger. We’ve also started hosting our own CDL training for our employees. We recently had four who have passed and a couple more who are almost ready to complete the course and test. Dalton Ramsey, our Safety Supervisor, is doing a great job and saving the city money.”
“There will be a Public Hearing by the Arkansas Department of Transportation at the JPH Center of North Arkansas College from 4 to 7 p.m. on August 29th. They will conduct a location and design public hearing to present the design plans and environmental assessment for the proposed Hwy. 65/Industrial Park Rd./Main Street intersection improvements and the widening of Hwy. 65 from Industrial Park Road to Hwy. 7.”
Phillips also updated the council members on the ongoing development of a sewer system computer model and capacity studies. “We recently met with the project team and received positive feedback about our sewer system. They told us that our system is overall quite a bit healthier than most in our region. We still have work to do in addressing some weak areas but we are in a good position to plan for growth and start planning upgrades to the system. We hope to leverage these studies and plans to obtain state-level funding that we expect to become available”
“We are also preparing to relocate a water line at Hwy. 65 and Hester Drive in September ahead of an ARDOT project that will improve that intersection and realign Harness Dr. so that it can be accessed by the stop lights. Other components of this ARDOT project also include improvements to the traffic lights at Walmart Drive and a new traffic light at Airport Road.” he said.
Planning and Zoning will meet on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at 1 p.m. to hear a request to rezone the property behind Burger King and the formerly Beeler Tire property. The zoning request is to convert the property from single-family residential to high-density residential. Other items on the Commission agenda include development plan reviews for a new DG Market on S. Pine St., a Take 5 Oil Change on Hwy 65N, an addition to the Boone County Museum that will house an American Freightways exhibit, and a new building for B&B Automotive on the bypass.
