What is Cops and Kids?
This is a special time between local police officers and students who need additional help with Christmas gifts for their families.
The Harrison Police Department raises funds annually to fund a shopping trip for kids the schools have identified as needing assistance. Last year, the school district identified 16 students, and they spent $6,000.
Assistant Police Chief John Cagle said, “Last year, the items the kids picked out were very interesting. One child purchased shoes for everyone in his family. They usually pick something for themselves, but it’s important to many of them to pick presents for their family members.”
HPD Administration Assistant Melissa Lane said donations can be dropped off at City Hall and placed in the box in the lobby. “If someone wants to make a cash donation, they can ask for me, and I’ll make sure that money goes to the kids' shopping trip.”
HPD staff members and officers will be at Walmart on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15-16, to accept donations in person. They will be there from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.
“We have the most generous community, and I’m very grateful for the heart our officers have for helping children,” Police Chief Chris Graddy said.
